The Chinese Spring Festival is the most important festival for us. All family members get together to have a reunion dinner on New Year's Eve and bless each other. At about 12 o'clock, some parents and children light crackers. The whole sky is lighted brightly. We may watch the fireworks excitedly. How busy it is!

On the first early morning of the new year, many senior citizens get up early and they stick the reversed Fu or hang some couplets on the front door. Some house's windows are sticked on red paper cuttings.

During the Spring Festival, people use red lanterns and Spring Festival couplets to decorate their houses. They put on all kinds of colorful clothes and often visit friends and relatives or get together to eat dumplings, fish, meat and other delicious food.

It is said that in ancient times, there was a monster called "Nian" in China. It had long tentacles and was extremely fierce. "Nian" lived deep in the sea all year round and only came ashore on New Year's Eve to devour livestock and harm people's lives. Therefore, on New Year's Eve, people in every village and town would help the old and the young to flee to the mountains to avoid the harm of the monster.

One year, an old man came begging. Only an old woman in the east of the village gave him some food and advised him to go up the mountain to hide from the "Nian" monster. The old man stroked his beard and smiled, saying that if the woman let him stay at home for one night, he would surely drive the "Nian" monster away.

In the middle of the night, the "Nian" monster broke into the village. It found that the atmosphere in the village was different from previous years. At the old woman's house in the east of the village, the door was pasted with red paper and the house was brightly lit. The "Nian" monster trembled all over and let out a strange cry.

It glared at the old woman's house for a moment and then rushed over wildly. It turned out that the "Nian" monster was most afraid of red, firelight and explosions. At this time, the old woman's door opened wide, and an old man in a red robe was laughing heartily inside. The "Nian" monster was greatly frightened and fled in confusion.

The next day was the first day of the first lunar month. People who returned from taking refuge were very surprised to see that the village was safe and sound. At this time, the old woman suddenly realized and hurriedly told the villagers about the promise of the begging old man.

The villagers rushed to the old woman's house and saw that there was red paper pasted on the door, a pile of unburned bamboo in the yard was still cracking, and several red candles in the house were still giving off residual light... Overjoyed, the villagers put on new clothes and hats to visit relatives and friends to celebrate the advent of good luck.
